PLA and PETG are the two most common materials for FDM printing. Both are easy to print and affordable, but they behave differently in practice. Here are the differences that actually matter.
PLA — simple and detailed
PLA (polylactic acid) is made from renewable raw material and is the easiest material to print. It produces sharp detail, fine surfaces and doesn't warp during printing.
- Good for: prototypes, figurines, models, decoration and parts not exposed to heat or high load.
- Limitation: softens already at around 55–60 °C — never leave a PLA part in a hot car in summer.
PETG — tougher and more flexible
PETG combines some of PLA's ease of printing with better impact and heat resistance. It's slightly harder to print but handles more.
- Good for: functional parts, enclosures, brackets, outdoor parts and things that need to take a knock.
- Limitation: can produce some "stringing" while printing and rarely matches PLA's razor-sharp detail.

Which should you choose?
