Is 3D-printed PLA waterproof?

Why 3D-printed PLA is rarely truly waterproof — and how to make the part tighter.

Short answer: no, a regular PLA print is not waterproof straight off the printer. It can hold water for a while, but over time it often leaks through the tiny gaps between the layers. Here we explain why — and what you can do about it.

Why do prints leak?

An FDM part is built layer by layer, and between each layer there are microscopic gaps where the filament hasn't fully fused. Water finds its way into these capillaries and can seep through the wall, especially under pressure or over a longer period. The problem isn't the plastic itself — PLA doesn't absorb much water — it's the geometry of how the part is built. A part can therefore be "tight enough" to hold water for a few minutes yet still drip after an hour.

When is it a problem?

  • Containers and vases meant to stand with water for a long time.
  • Parts under pressure, such as couplings and nozzles.
  • Parts that need to withstand moisture outdoors over time.

For dry uses or brief contact with water, it rarely matters.

Tricks to make PLA tighter

You can get a long way with the right slicer settings and a little post-processing:

  • More walls (perimeters): 4–6 walls give a far tighter shell than the default 2–3.
  • Higher infill near the surface and more top and bottom layers reduce leak paths.
  • Slightly higher temperature and a slightly slower print help the layers fuse better.
  • Coating afterwards: epoxy, food-safe varnish or a dedicated sealant fills in the pores. This is the most reliable way to get a truly waterproof PLA part.

Keep in mind that PLA softens already at around 55–60 °C, so avoid hot water and sun-heated environments.

Better material choices for moisture

If the part really has to stay sealed, switching material is often the simplest solution. PETG fuses more tightly between layers, handles moisture and heat better, and is a natural choice for bottles, enclosures and outdoor parts. Read more in our PLA vs PETG comparison.
