Spare parts with 3D printing: repair instead of replace

How 3D printing lets you recreate broken and discontinued spare parts — materials, methods and examples.

It's a familiar frustration: a small plastic part breaks and suddenly the whole item is useless. The part is no longer made, or costs more to order than it's worth. With 3D printing there's often a better way — simply print a new part. Here we go through how it works and what suits best.

When a spare part is no longer available

Many products stop working because of a single small component: a broken clip, a snapped gear, a cracked bracket. The manufacturer may have discontinued the model, or only sells the whole unit. 3D printing lets you recreate just that part — and save a product that would otherwise end up in the bin. It's both cheaper and more sustainable.

Recreate from a sample

If you still have the broken part, much is gained. From the pieces that remain — or an identical part from the other side — the part can be measured and redrawn in CAD. This is called reverse engineering: working backwards from a physical object to a drawing. Even a part that broke into several pieces can often be reconstructed if you can see what it looked like whole. The more there is left to measure, the more accurate the result.

Choose the right material

A spare part usually needs to withstand something — not just look right. Consider what the original part was exposed to:

  • Mechanical load — tough, strong materials handle forces and impacts better. See The strongest 3D material.
  • Heat — near a motor, in a car or in a kitchen you need a material with higher heat resistance than PLA.
  • Outdoor use — then resistance to moisture and UV matters.

3D printing works for a wide range of everyday parts:

  • Knobs, dials and handles on appliances and furniture.
  • Clips, mounts and brackets in the car or home.

  • Discontinued parts for older equipment and hobby gear.

Not everything can be printed, of course — parts with extreme demands on strength, heat or precision may need other manufacturing. But for a large share of the plastic parts that break in everyday life, 3D printing is an excellent solution.
